Reclaimed Pavers – The Eco-Friendly Choice

Many southeast Michigan homeowners are starting to understand the benefits to creating an environmentally friendly home. They are installing everything from solar panels and high efficiency windows to low flow toilets and reclaimed building materials. Many times, however, homeowners don’t see the easy ways that they can make their home’s exterior just as environmentally conscientious, while still looking great. Reclaimed brick pavers are a great way to get a beautiful and durable hardscape while also being eco-friendly.

Why Reclaimed Materials Are a Good Idea

Lots of people love to use funky antique items for decorating, and reclaimed wood from old barns has been a really popular decorating material for homes for many years now. These products are both fashionable and unique, but they also recycle and reuse materials that when purchased new, may have an impact on the environment. We are a very disposable society, so when we choose recycled and reclaimed materials for our homes, we are reducing the production of new materials and reducing the amount of waste that is put in landfills. As our Macomb County clients become more and more aware of our impacts on the Earth, they are starting to look for landscaping materials that are also low-impact and environmentally friendly.

Historic and Modern

There is a misconception that when you decide to use reclaimed bricks for your home’s hardscape surfaces, your only option is really old, really worn bricks. We would call these bricks “historic.” In many cases, reclaimed historic bricks that have come from older homes and buildings or even streets that have been resurfaced, are the perfect material. Reclaimed historic bricks are perfect for the older Victorian homes in the Detroit and southeast Michigan area. They create a landscape detail that accurately reflects the home’s vintage. However, historic bricks are not your only option. Modern brick pavers are often discarded or put in reclaim piles when homeowners redo a hardscape, or an existing paver surface is removed for new construction. These reclaimed materials are great for the homeowner who wants the durability of a modern brick material, but is mindful of our environment. Depending on where the bricks come from, you can get nearly new brick pavers that show little wear and tear, and can fool even the most critical eyes.

Flexibility is Important

Here’s the really important thing to remember when you consider using reclaimed bricks for your home’s hardscape – you need to be flexible with color and design. You may not be able to get the perfect blond bricks for your patio, and we may have to be creative with how we install your hardscape, to incorporate the materials that are available. Does this mean that your brick paver hardscape won’t look amazing? No, absolutely not. But it does mean that as the homeowner, you should be flexible, and trust that we are going to find you the best materials possible, and create a hardscape that is both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

Costs

Reclaimed materials are not always the most low-cost option for your landscaping or hardscape project. Due to limited availability or the historic nature of the pavers that you select, reclaimed pavers can actually cost more than new. It is important to keep this in mind when you are planning your new paver hardscape and how it will fit into your budget.
